Garden Project Outline
On meeting with Donal & Margaret at their home in Midleton Co.Cork, they were both completely lost on how to tackle their back garden. They wanted to make the garden warm and welcoming. As shown in the images below, their garden was starting from 6 feet high on top of a old retaining wall and going back through the site as shown. Access to the site was poor. Access was either through the house from the main road or access over the back wall at the top level of the garden. They both requested that the proposed design allow them to have easy access to all three levels. Allow them to have an area where they can entertain guests at their home, have a built in BBQ area, an area where they can enjoy breakfast together in the summer months, and above all, a garden that is pleasant to the eye where they can spend later years pottering about with planting and herbs.
Sublime Landscaping Proposed Garden Design
The most important factor with this landscaping design was the ease of access to all three levels on the site. Having a step thread that was comfortable and a design that served two purposes. The design needed strong retaining properties, and secondly, aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The design our landscapers proposed can be seen below. The design incorporating steel, pressure treated oak sleepers, which softened the retaining efforts, and the main spine of the design, the access steps from ground level to level two.
Construction of the Garden Design
From the images below, you can see that access and working conditions on the site were extremely unfavorable for any landscape design contractor. The foundations for the steps were first excavated out. From here the rest of the design would grow outwards. As sublime landscaping excavated, we excavated rock which was later used in the stonework on the walls of the second level.
Stone Work and Hard Landscaping
As the initial machinery and heavier construction was completed, Sublime landscaping moved into the second phase of the landscaping project. The construction of the retaining walls required for the entire site. This construction work ranged from stone work, steel fabrication, placing of Indian sandstone paving and other various aspects required for the landscaping project.
Final Phase of Planting, Electrics and Paving
As shown below, the garden design has reached its final phase of paving, planting and installation of electrics, and surrounding fencing. This project was only completed in late October of this year 2014.
